Articles (overview — A and The)

1

What is it?

Articles are small words that come before nouns: A, AN, and THE. "A" and "AN" are indefinite articles (used for non-specific things): "a book" (any book), "an apple" (any apple). Use "AN" before vowel sounds (a, e, i, o, u). "THE" is the definite article (used for specific things): "the book" (a specific book we both know). Sometimes we use no article (zero article) with plural or uncountable nouns when speaking generally: "Books are useful" / "Water is important."
