Even

1

What is it?

EVEN is used to emphasize something SURPRISING or UNEXPECTED. Position varies: before word you emphasize. EVEN + surprising element: "Even John came" (surprising because John usually doesn't come). EVEN + comparative: "even better" / "even more expensive" (emphasize degree). EVEN IF: condition (it doesn't matter): "I'll go even if it rains" (the condition doesn't change the result). EVEN THOUGH: contrast (although): "Even though I studied, I failed" (stronger than although). NOT EVEN: emphasize negative: "I didn't even try" / "Not even John came."

"This is even better than I expected." / "It's even more expensive than last year." / "She runs even faster now." / "It got even worse." / "Even less people came."

  3. 3

EVEN IF — condition that doesn't matter

"I'll go even if it rains." (rain doesn't change decision) / "Even if you ask me, I won't tell." / "I'll help even if it's difficult." / "I wouldn't buy it even if it was free."

  4. 4

EVEN THOUGH — strong contrast (although)

Common mistakes

I'll go if even it rains.

I'll go even if it rains.

Use EVEN IF (not if even).

I studied even though, I failed.

Even though I studied, I failed.

EVEN THOUGH comes before the clause (no comma after).

John even came. (neutral statement)

Even John came.

Put EVEN before the element you want to emphasize (John is surprising).

I even didn't try.

I didn't even try.

EVEN comes after auxiliary (didn't) but before main verb (try).

How was the exam? Did you pass?

Really? Even you failed? You're the smartest person I know!
L

Lisa

I know! It was even harder than I expected. Even the easy questions were confusing.

Will you take it again?
