What is it?

Negative modal verbs are often confusing because they have very different meanings. "Mustn't" means prohibition — it is forbidden. "Don't have to" means there is no obligation. "Can't" can mean inability or impossibility. Understanding these differences is essential for clear communication.

  • "Mustn't" = prohibited / not allowed (strong prohibition).
  • "Don't/doesn't have to" = not necessary / no obligation.
  • "Can't" = unable to OR logically impossible.
  • "Couldn't" = was unable to OR was logically impossible.
  • "Shouldn't" = it is not advisable / not a good idea.
  • "Needn't" = not necessary (more formal/British: "You needn't worry").

When to use it
