B1Tenses — Future

Future Continuous

1

What is it?

The future continuous describes an action that will be in progress at a specific moment in the future. Just as the past continuous looks back at an ongoing action, the future continuous looks forward to one. It's very useful for talking about what will be happening at a certain time, making polite enquiries, and emphasising that an activity will be in progress around a future point.

When to use it

An action in progress at a specific future time.

"At this time tomorrow, I'll be sitting on a beach." / "At 9pm, we'll be watching the match."

  2. 2

  4. 4

"Will you be using the car later?" (softer than "Are you using the car?") / "Will you be attending the conference?"

  5. 5

"I'll be passing the post office anyway — I can drop it off."

At midnight, they'll still be working.

Future continuous: will be + -ing. Word order: will still be working.

Will she be know the answer by then?

Will she know the answer by then?

'Know' is stative — it doesn't use the continuous form. Use future simple: will know.

I'll be seeing you at the party?

Will I see you at the party? / Will you be at the party?

Future continuous questions need the correct word order: Will I be seeing you?
